Our school Eco Team meet once a month to discuss ways of improving our school and becoming more environmentally friendly. We believe that it is important to give everyone within the school a voice and a chance to participate in decision making
Members are elected by pupils in their own year groups. There are twelve pupil representatives on our Eco Team and we sometimes invite other members of staff to join our meetings. Pupils bring ideas from their classes to discuss at the meetings, and they feedback to their classes after the meetings.
Glan-yr-Afon holds the coveted Eco Schools Green Flag. We are inspected every two years and we are now the holders of a third Green Flag.
The Flag can be seen flying near our front entrance.
Every year, the eco-committee carry out a review of the school, looking at all the areas covered by eco-schools programme. This includes waste minimisation, energy, global citizenship, school grounds, water, healthy living, transport and litter. They then use this review to write an action plan for the year ahead. These are some of the findings of the most recent review:
Litter
we need to make sure that the food binis taken out every breaktime.
we need to carry out a litter pick in the local area
Energy
we need to introduce classroom energy monitors and have a reward chart for saving electricity
School grounds
we need to move the forest school site
we need to build bug hotels and put up bird boxes
